The president of New Caledonia's USTKE union has called on the French government to do whatever it can resolve the Iraq crisis through diplomatic and political means.

Gerard Jodar made the call in a letter to the French president which was presented to the high commission as part of the weekend anti-war march in Noumea.

About 400 people, ranging from environmnetalists to women's groups and pro-independence parties, followed the call to march against an American invasion of Iraq.

The 12-strong delegation of the marchers was received by the high commission.
