Fiji's commissioner of prisons, Aisea Taoka, is to be investigated over his alleged collusion in the May 2000 coup.

The minister for home affairs, Joketani Cokanasiga, confirmed this in parliament in response to questions from the opposition leader, Mick Beddoes.

Mr Taoka's alleged role in the coup was mentioned by a state witness in the treason trial of Josefa Nata and Timoci Silatolu.

The witness, Salesi Tuifagalele, said George Speight had told them not to worry if the coup wasn't a success because he had already discussed the issue with the police commissioner, Col Isikia Savua, and the commissioner of prisons, Aisea Taoka.

Mr Cokanasiga said it was in the public interest and in the interest of Mr Taoka himself that fair investigations should proceed.

The minister said people who had information about Mr Taoka's involvement in the coup should register their complaints with the police.

Mr Taoka is a former deputy commissioner of police.

Mr Cokanasiga also said the coup investigation files on the former commissioner and now Fiji's ambassador to the United Nations, Col Isikia Savua, were still open.
