Call to extend nomination period in PNG southern highlands election

10:36 am on 26 February 2003

The electoral commission in Papua New Guinea says there has been a request to extend the nomination period for supplementary elections in the southern highlands.

The provincial returning officer wants to allow nominations to be made until Wednesday instead of the previous deadline of tomorrow.

When nominations were to open last week, unpaid workers from last year's failed elections shut down the election office in Mendi.

The electoral commissioner has refused to say when the payments will be made, citing the risk of possible hold-ups to steal the money.

Last year's polls were abandoned in six electorates because of violence and fraud.
