Court action expected in Fiji telecom stand-off

5:00 pm on 27 February 2003

Fiji's cut-price overseas call provider, TELPAC, says it is preparing to file court proceedings against the monopoly telecommunications company, FINTEL, after it was discovered filtering information entering Fiji.

The director of telecommunications, Josua Turaganivalu, is reported to have sought an explanation from FINTEL because it blocked TELPAC's voice mail.

TELPAC's chief executive, Tim Gibbons, says FINTEL has been basically censoring information entering the country and it was about time something was done.

Mr Gibbons says for example people who had signed up for the internet were not given full access to information as they had thought.

He says TELPAC will be filing legal proceedings by next week.

Mr Gibbons says in the meantime the government should investigate FINTEL thoroughly.

"Those that don't act upon that information are just as corrupt as those that would have been involved in the formation of it. Now this is in the public, now it's out there, the government has a judiciary responsibility to immediately and expeditiously run in and resolve this matter and get to the bottom of it."

Tim Gibbons says he expects the government to take legal action against FINTEL because it will not want TELPAC to appear to be taking the initiative.
