12:26 pm on 3 March 2003

Solomon Islands police are reported to be concerned by an increase in assault and harassment cases against the staff of the treasury division in the Finance Ministry.

Senior police officials have confirmed that a police officer was involved in an assault on the Accountant General in the ministry of finance on Thursday.

And they say the Minister of Police, Augustine Taneko was threatened and another treasury staff member assaulted by special constables angered by continuing delays in payments owed to them.

The government paid three outstanding pay-days for teachers, one for police and one for public servants yesterday.

Meanwhile the treasury division has again closed indefinitely following the attacks.
