Papua New Guinea police have confiscated military-issue guns and ammunition destined for the Southern Highlands.

Members of Port Moresby's dog unit say they were tipped off about a man who had a bag with guns and ammunition at the Erima settlement.

Dog Unit officer, Inspector Chris Kopie, says they searched a house in the settlement and later discovered a bag containing two PNG Defence Force issue SLR rifles, an empty magazine and two others that were fully loaded.

Police say two men from the Southern Highlands have been arrested and will be handed over to the criminal investigation division.
