Teachers union in Solomon Islands puts off national strike for two weeks

7:20 am on 3 March 2003

The Solomon Island National Teachers Association, or SINTA, has put off a planned national strike for a further two weeks,

The General Secretary of SINTA, Fred Taika, says the government has now settled three of the teacher's salary arrears.

The union and the government are said to be working towards the settlement of the remaining outstanding payments before the 24th of this month.

Mr Taika told the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation that the remaining two weeks should give the government plenty of time to settle any arrears.
