Fiji fishermen mutiny

5:02 pm on 5 March 2003

The mostly Fijian crew of a fishing vessel are reported to have mutinied on the high seas after the captain allegedly refused to feed them.

The Fiji Times says the mutiny occurred on the Winful No 1 while it was fishing in Vanuatu waters.

The crew are quoted as saying they were forced to take the action because the Asian captain and cook ignored their concerns that they had been without food for two days.

A member of the crew, Nemani Raqauqau says they then decided to take over the ship, cut off its fishing lines and set sail for Fiji.

The owner of the vessel, Ma Ching Kui, says the ringleaders of the mutiny have been sacked.

The Fiji Marine Board is expected to conduct an enquiry into the incident.
