PNG court quashes leadership charges against MP

11:30 am on 6 March 2003

MP, Peter Yama, the leader of the People's Labour Party, has become the first Papua New Guinea leader to successfully challenge his referral to a leadership tribunal.

The Ombudsman Commission's decision to refer Mr Yama to the Public Prosecutor for misconduct under the Leadership Code has been quashed by the National Court.

The decision means Mr Yama can now return to parliament after being suspended four days ago.
