Fiji NGOs to brief UN over government's racist policies

11:33 am on 11 March 2003

A spokesman for the coalition, Poni Tate Ravula, says they will give CERD some background on how the Fiji government aims for indigenous political domination.

Mr Ravula says they hope the UN will apply pressure on the Fij government to change its ways.

"We look upon CERD to actually put pressure on this government to review particularly it's policies like the affirmative action programmes which is predominately for indigenous Fijians and ignores the Indo Fijian population so we are looking on CERD as an external pressure for this government to reconsider and actually go and do the right thing for a change"
