Solomons power cuts put off

5:35 pm on 13 March 2003

The Solomon Islands Electricity Authority says after reaching a deal with the government it has withdrawn plans to cut the power to government departments and business operations today.

The Authority had said it would cut the power because the government agencies owed it about two million US dollars.

Its general manager, Mike Nation, says this debt means the company can not meet daily fuel costs or pay for much needed maintenance.

But Mr Nation says the ultimatum worked and the government has committed to meet regular monthly payments which should provide enough operating capital.

"So the crisis is passed for the time being but we do retain the right that if they can't fulfill their pledge to us we will continue disconnecting at a later date."
