9:06 am on 14 March 2003

The Solomon islands government avoided a mass disconnection of its electricity supply yesterday by agreeing a deal with the Electricity Authority.

The general manager of the authority, Mike Nation, had threatened to cut off the power to government departmernts and statutory authorities unless the government settled unpaid bills amounting to about two million US dollars.

Yesterday both sides agreed that the debt would be paid off in regular instalments.
