Solomons clinics to reopen after pay dispute

11:57 am on 14 March 2003

Clinics run by the Honiara City Council will re-open today after the Solomon Islands government agreed to pay outstanding salaries for nurses working in the clinics.

The general secretary of the National Union of Workers, Tony Kagovai, says a 28 day strike notice will remain in place to ensure the government and the city council put policies in place to ensure salaries are paid on time.

The nurses refused to work yesterday, demanding that their salary arrears be paid in full.

However an agreement was reached with the government who agreed to pay two outstanding pay days.

The Council has about ten clinics in the city but only half of them are actually operating.
