Fiji Air settles crash claim out of court

4:56 pm on 21 March 2003

Fiji domestic airline Air Fiji has made an out-of-court settlement and paid compensation to relatives of the 17 people who died when one of its planes crashed in July 1999.

Fiji TV reports that the amount of the damage ranges from 7-thousand to 24-thousand US dollars.

This has been confirmed by the son of one of the crash victims, Senator Kuar Battan Singh.

A report on the accident prepared by the Australian Transportation Safety Bureau said Air Fiji pilots demonstrated a low level of skills about the Bandeirante aircraft involved in the accident and the airline's operating procedures were inadequate.
