PNG Government says it is considering a 2 million dollar claim for services from BRF militants

The Papua New Guinea Government has confirmed that the claim of more than two million US dollars by former members of the Bougainville Resistance Force for services rendered is with the Finance Department.

This comes after members of the BRF earlier threatened to pull out of the weapons disposal programme on Bougainville unless the government pays them for their services during the 10 year conflict.

The BRF claim is on top of a 340 thousand dollar compensation payment made by the government last year.

The BRF said that the government had promised the money and that not all members were compensated from last year's payout.

Kora Nou from the Prime Minister's Media Unit says Finance officials are assessing the BRF members' claim to see if it is reasonable and justified.

"Because there will be public funds involved, we just want to be satisfied with the claim at hand, and we just have to determine that the information and all this is in order and we can proceed. We want to get on with the peace process, and anything of this nature that comes up, it's all in everybody's interest to try to get to the bottom of it as soon as we can, and make a move on."
