Solomon Islands dismisses Pentagon claims it support US coalition against Iraq

6:48 pm on 25 March 2003

The Solomon Islands Government has rejected a Pentagon claim that it supports the United States coalition against Iraq.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office says it wishes to disassociate itself from the claim and that it continues to support the United Nations and its efforts to address the Iraqi issue.

A spokesman for the U.S.Embassy in Port Moresby says they had been under the impression that the Solomons Government had aligned itself with the coalition.

But he says if the Government says it hasn't then that is the reality at the moment.

It had been reported by news services, including UPI and the BBC, that Solomon Islands was one of the now 43 countries supporting the US action.

The Government rejects that but does say it wishes to reiterate its continuing support for the global fight against terrorism.
