Higher security levels for international travellers from Fiji

4:30 pm on 26 March 2003

Security levels at Fiji's two international airports at Nadi and Nausori have been upgraded from today.

Radio Fiji reports that security for flights to Australia and Japan has been upgraded to levels consistent with north bound flights to the United States.

A statement issued by the Ministry for Civil Aviation says security levels on all other international flights would be maintained.

A Ministry official says the current arrangements arise from a security assessment following the outbreak of hostilities in Iraq.

The official says while there are no direct threats to Fiji, indirect threats exist for flights bound for Australia and Japan.

The measures will be reviewed in two weeks.
