American Samoa to check for SARS

9:24 am on 12 April 2003

The American Samoa Health Director, Tamasoalii Dr Joseph Tufa, says efforts to safeguard the territory from the SARS disease will be directed at incoming vessels and airlines.

The territory doesn't have any direct airlinks with SARS-affected countries and Dr Tufa says travellers from these countries will be screened at transit points like Honolulu and Apia.

Dr Tufa says in the case of vessels, quarantine officials will be monitoring arriving ships closely to ensure that no crew members have the disease.
