Niue premier disputes opposition claim of inaction

4:36 pm on 15 April 2003

The premier of Niue, Young Vivian, says the government is giving itself three months to kickstart two new industries and further develop tourism.

He says a statement from opposition MP, O'Love Jacobsen, that little is being done to reverse a decline in business activity, is untrue.

Mr Vivian says work is continuing on creating a vanilla industry, developing fisheries and increasing tourism.

"I don't think the member is taking into consideration the things that are happening now, for instance, the increasing numbers in tourists, that's definite - the people now planting vanilla - the people now who are looking for ways and means in which we could have our own companies in association with New Zealand companies, to have fisheries."

Mr Vivian says there's been high level interest from the New Zealand government to the Niue government's investment proposals in these industries.
