A report from Fiji says 11 people escaped death after the New Zealand registered fishing boat they were on caught fire.

The Daily Post says they had to be rescued by the Fiji Navy.

It says the Solander Karipa, belonging to the Solander Company, set out on a fishing trip last Saturday.

The fire broke out in the kitchen on Sunday when the ship was about 360 kilometres from Suva.

Another company vessel, the Solander 5, accompanied the navy vessel carrying food and water for the distressed crew.

They arrived in Suva last night where they were treated in hospital and sent home.

Government officials are expected to inspect the damaged vessel today.
