American Samoan under opbservation for SARS

2:33 pm on 8 May 2003

An American Samoa man is under observation at the LBJ hospital in Pago Pago for possible symptoms of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS.

According to the Chief of Medical Services, Dr Iotamo Saleapaga, the man was on a business trip to Japan, Hong Kong and Australia before returning via Apia.

He visited the Emergency clinic with symptoms of the flu but due to his travel history, medical staff have kept him in isolation and under observation.

Dr Saleapaga says tests to determine whether the man has SARS have been taken, but that there's no need for the public to panic, following reports of vistors to the hospital being alarmed at staff wearing face masks.
