Surge in gonorrhoea cases in Guam

4:07 pm on 8 May 2003

The Guam Department of Public Health says there has been a large jump in the rate of gonorrhoea infections in the last three months.

Guam averages around 50 gonorrhoea cases per year, but in the first three months of this year there have already been 20 cases reported.

At the same time last year there had only been 9 cases reported.

The Department says a number of factors could explain the rise including the influx of people travelling through Guam particularly US military personnel.

The Department is preparing a media campaign to remind people to have safe sex and take measures to combat sexually transmitted disease.
