Fiji Labour Party MP maintains call for PM's resignation over Duavata

10:02 am on 10 May 2003

The Fiji Labour party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, says a company formed by the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, and four senior ministers has the potential to become a vehicle for corrupt deals, extortion and money laundering.

Mr Qarase has said the company is an initiative for fundraising for the ruling SDL party, not a business.

But, Mr Chaudhry says claims by Mr Qarase that Duavata won't trade, aren't borne out by its articles of assocation which allow it to enter into arrangements with governments or municipalities to obtain rights and concessions.

And, another Labour Party MP, Poseci Bune, is calling on the president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, to dismiss the prime minister from office.

Mr Bune says Duavata Ltd is a clear breach of the code of conduct for MPs and ministers who are forbidden to use their office for private gain.

He says the company is an attempt to gain funds following the agriculture assistance scam.

"Because of the exposure of that scam, obviously these same people who directed and implemented that farming assistance scheme, are now looking for other avenues of raising funds for the next elections."
