New Zealand's minister for Pacific Island affairs, Mark Gosche, has resigned as a cabinet minister because of the serious illness affecting his wife.

Mr Gosche says his wife Carol is severely disabled following a brain haemorrhage a year ago, and it's been complicated by a recent bout of pneumonia.

He says she needs 24-hour care and is still unable to return home.
