The US Ambassador to the Marshall Islands, Michael Senko, has told students of the importance of a good education system to enable a nation to function.

Speaking to the first two students to complete a two year outrigger building programme, Mr Senko said three elements were necessary to obtain a solid education and contribute to national development: vision, tools and hardwork.

The two who have completed the course now know how to build model and larger sailing canoes.

They can also sail and run canoe charters.

The course organiser said the two men had changed their lives from involvement with petty crime to contributing to their community.
