Just one result outstanding in PNG's supplementary poll

In results from Papua New Guinea's Southern Highlands supplementary election, the key provincial constituency has been won by a prominent landower, Hami Yawari, for the People's Democratic Party.

That means the PDM has now picked up two of the six seats where polls were being re-run.

Those seats had their results declared void after violence and intimidation during general elections last year.

During his acceptance speech Mr Yawari said his first step will be to ask the national government to return financial powers back to the province.

Only one seat is now outstanding in the region, that of Imbonggu.

Court action by two rival candidates means the result won't be declared until after a Supreme Court application.
