Death toll after American Samoa's landslides now 4

10:52 am on 21 May 2003

The death toll from yesterday's landslides in American Samoa has been lowered from five to four.

Police say a woman who was seen with her daughter just before part of the slope crashed on the Langkilde Building in Fagatogo may have escaped.

Sifting through the rubble, they found one body of a woman only.

One of those who survived being trapped in the rubble lost part of his leg and was airlifted to Hawaii.

The three men killed in Pago Pago were from the same family.

A state of emergency remains in place and schools are closed for a second day.

People are advised to boil water for drinking because of possible contamination of the supplies by the floods.
