Solomons police object to criticism by NZ foreign minister

Senior police officers in Solomon Islands have criticised comments by New Zealand's foreign minister, Phil Goff, over alleged high-level corruption.

Mr Goff said armed police officers extorted money from cabinet to the point that the process of government has broken down.

But the deputy commissioner, Wilfred Akao, says such general comments don't help an already fragmented force in its efforts to restore law and order.

Mr Akao says the force has done a lot of good work which the media has chosen to ignore.

He says foreigners should not make sweeping statements with no basis.
