Fiji's chairman of chiefs calls for better behaviour

9:36 am on 31 May 2003

The Chairman of Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, says he wants chiefs to start behaving like chiefs.

He raised the issue at this week's Great Council meeting as several chiefs face charges in connection with the coup.

Prior to the meeting, Ratu Epeli had said that some chiefs should be stripped of their titles if they failed to perform their duties.

He says he reminded the chiefs how they should behave and the impact their behaviour had on the people.

"Chiefs who fall short of those values, in upholding those kind of values where people who belong to that particular chief can prosper, then obviously people suffer and people criticise the chiefs and people criticise the chiefly system. I was just trying to remind the chiefs of some of the ideas, some of the values that should be ingrained within ourselves in order that we can meet the expectations of our people."
