Amnesty International says racism in Fiji undermines law and order

Amnesty International has issued a new report and says in Fiji the rule of law and human rights are being undermined with people responsible for racist violence, torture and extra judicial executions enjoying impunity.

In its report, the London-based human rights watchdog says the return to full political stability is hampered by unresolved power struggles within the indigenous Fijian community and other resources.

It says people responsible for coup-related racist violence, torture and extra judicial executions continue to enjoy effective impunity while others are convicted in proceedings which avoid evidence on human rights violations and abuses being presented in court.

Amnesty says the government of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has indicated a growing awareness of constitutional and international human rights law.
