A Fiji government senator has called for sex offenders to be stoned to death or castrated .
The Fiji Times reports that Senator Apisai Tora made the call in the Upper House during debate on a bill increasing penalties for sex offences and robbery with violence.
Senator Tora, a longtime convert to Islam, said his religion has the most effective deterrents to sexual offences.
He said these were stoning to death for the most serious offences such as peadophilia and incest, and castration for other offences such as rape and defilement followed by lifetime banishment to some remote atoll.
He said the third punishment he was proposing was life imprisonment without any possibility of remission or parole.
Senator Tora, who led the campaign for the overthrow of the Chaudhry government, said sexual offences would fall drastically if his proposals are accepted and implemented.
Fiji has been plagued with increasing reports of rapes, incest, paedophilia and other sexual offences with the attorney general, Qoroniasi Bale, saying the rise is embarrassing the government.
