Nauru still without a Government after 3 weeks wrangling

3:46 pm on 23 May 2003

Nauru's 18 Parliamentarians have failed for a third week to resolve a deadlock over who should form the new Government.

National elections were held at the beginning of May, but despite a series of meetings, and the threat of new elections, they have failed to elect a Speaker.

A vote for President cannot be held until the Speaker's role is filled.

There are three candidates to lead the country, each with equal backing.

Another attempt to settle the impasse will be made on Tuesday morning.
