Cooks Audit Office questions spending by former prime minister

The Cook Islands Audit Office has raised concerns about payments made by former prime minister and now deputy prime minister Dr Terepai Maoate from his ministerial support fund.

The Office has questioned the payment of 12 thousand dollars to newspaper publisher, George Pitt, for advisory services.

A local newspaper says there is no supporting documentation to prove that the services were legal, valid and reasonable.

Neither was there any contract document formalising the arrangements between George Pitt Consultants and Dr Moate's office.

The Audit Office also raised concerns over the lack of receipts or supporting documents to verify accountable overseas allowances paid to staff and the former prime minister while travelling overseas.

The Office is particularly concerned over private accomodation costs paid out as well as a medical trip for the former prime minister which blew its budget by almost 3 thousand dollars.
