A report from Fiji says the government plans to take control of the Daily Post newspaper in which it already has substantial shares.
The Fiji Sun says a cabinet meeting yesterday decided the Daily Post needed state intervention.
The Sun quotes its sources as saying the takeover will be finalised soon.
Onetime Daily Post editor, Mesake Koroi, is now tipped to return to head the newspaper.
Mr Koroi was editor of the public broadcaster, Radio Fiji, but his contract was not renewed on expiry two weeks ago after he interviewed the minister for information on the controversial Media Bill for a government radio programme.
A recent report said the government was putting pressure on the Daily Post to take Mr Koroi back as its editor.
At the time, the minister for public enterprises, Irami Matairavula, denied that he had been approached by cabinet ministers and top government officials to have Koroi back at the Daily Post.
Mr Koroi is the prime minister's cousin.
