Two brothers to contest Kiribati presidency

2:29 pm on 10 June 2003

Two brothers have been nominated in Kiribati out of the three candidates to contest next month's presidential elections.

Dr Harry Tong has been put forward by the ruling Maurin Maneaba Party while his younger brother, Anote Tong, is being backed by the opposition.

Both have served as ministers under Teburoro Tito who is barred by the constitution from seeking a further term as president.

The third candidate in the election on July the 4th is Banueera Barina.

Mr Tito's government fell after a budget vote last month, less than half a year after its re-election.

His party was returned with a comfortable majority and observers say Dr Harry Tong is seen as the frontrunner for the presidency.
