Solomon Islands health workers issue strike notice over unpaid wages

10:08 am on 2 June 2003

Strike action is being threatened by health workers in the Solomon Islands capital, Honiara, over unpaid wages.

The chairman of the Honiara city council, Alfrence Fatai, is calling on the national government to act on the issue before health services in Honiara come to a standstill.

He says the workers have eight pay arrears.

Mr Fatai says although the workers are direct council employees, they are paid by the national government through the Ministry of Health.

The workers have issued 28 days noice of strike action if their salary arrears remain unpaid.
