Anger in Norfolk when Australian MPs attack government services

4:54 pm on 21 July 2003

The Norfolk Islands Chief Minister is angry at claims by Australian parliamentarians that some of the island's services are third world.

MPs visited Norfolk last week as part of the government's policy to bring the island under Canberra's full control.

Norfolk currently enjoys different electoral laws and tax free status, which Australia wants to change.

Senator Ross Lighfoot headed the External Territories Committee visit to Norfolk and says the island is unable to provide many basic services.

The Chief Minister Geoff Gardiner says the Senator's claims are fanciful concoctions.

"Certainly not based on fact and he could do well to pay attention to facts that are provided to him and not just his desire to see Norfolk Island normalized"
