The Solomon Islands Red Cross says 1245 people displaced by the violence on the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal are now being cared for in and around Honiara.

The Red Cross's Agnes Wale says a few of the villagers are being cared for by relatives but most are in camps run by the provincial government with help from aid agencies.

Meanwhile, hundreds more displaced people continue to fend for themselves on the Weather Coast.

Loti Yates of the National Disaster Council says because of the security situation it has not been possible to check on their welfare.

And he says more displaced people are expected to cross the island to Honiara.

"There has been a steady stream of people coming in, and we are expecting that to continue for as long as the problems are still being experienced, on that part of the island."
