Dengue death toll in New Caledonia continues to rise

The death toll from a dengue epidemic in New Caledonia has reached 14.

The latest to die was a 73 year old man from the main island's east coast.

Official figures show that another four and a half thousand people have been affected by the fever since the outbreak began in January.

However health authorities say the real situation may be much worse with possibly as many as 13 thousand affected.

This week the Territorial Government launched hard hitting television advertisements to try and persuade people to protect themselves from the disease carrying mosquito larvae.
