Opposition on Niue to plans to build accommodation and buy cars to attract Forum meeting

An opposition MP in Niue is criticising a proposal to increase accommodation units and purchase more than 100 cars in a bid to host the 2004 Pacific Forum leaders meeting.

The plan is also opposed by tourism property owners who say that only 30 percent of the 120 beds available are filled every month.

Opposition MP, Terry Coe says the government proposal should undergo the scrutiny of a feasibility study because the cost of the units and the cars could outweigh the economic benefits from the Forum meeting.

He says the money could be better spent on roads and maintaining government-owned buildngs.
