Fioji pro-democracy organisation becomes a registered company

The Fiji-based pro-democracy organisation, the Citizens Constitutional Forum, has changed its legal status to a registered compnay.

The government cancelled the CCF's registration as a charitable organisation two years ago.

Its executive director, the Rev Akuila Yabaki, says the penalty was imposed because the CCF campaigned for the restoration of the 1997 Constitution and championed human rights.

The government accused it of being involved in politics.

The Rev Yabaki has told Fiji TV that registration as a company was the only option left to operate legally in Fiji.

But it will have no provisions to raise capital or make profits, and will continue to depend on contributions to fund its activities.
