Fiji military chief warns of danger in accepting coup

4:26 pm on 16 July 2003

Fiji's military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama has warned that if people accept the 2000 coup, it will be an invitation for the same to happen in the future.

The Daily Post quotes Commodore Bainimarama as saying that what happened then was the result of the wrong judgement of some leaders.

He says the military is carrying on with its invesitgations and is determined to see that all those behind the upheaval are brought to justice.

Commodore Bainimarama says the military supports the government but it has its own duty to see that nothing drastic is brought upon the nation as happened in 2000.

He says the military is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that people of the nation are properly governed by their elected leaders.

The military commander's comments come as Fiji awaits the Supreme Court ruling on the multi-party cabinet case which may result in the Labour Party being included in the government.
