Fiji government wants more indigenous ownership of media

The Fiji government wants to promote indigenous Fijian ownership of the local media industry.

The information minister, Simione Kaitani, says indigenous ownership will be in line with the governments affirmative action programmes.

Indigenous Fijians already own majority shares in Fiji Television limited and part of the shares in Communications Fiji limited which operates four commercial radio stations in Fiji and two in Papua New Guinea.

The government is also the largest single shareholder in the Daily Post newspaper and is considering their sale.

Mr Kaitani says apart from ownership, indigenous Fijians would be encouraged to play a more participatory role in the management of these companies.
