180 firearms collected in Solomon Islands Temotu province

10:22 am on 19 August 2003

The Australian-led intervention force has destroyed 180 firearms in Solomon Islands' Temotu province amid concern that the weapons amnesty expiry date is unrealistic.

The force destroyed the arms at the Lata police station before heading for the Reef islands.

George West reports.

"Firearms collection authorities in the Temotu province are not happy with the Solomon Islands National Peace council. Spokesman Parliament member for Santa Cruz constituency Patterson Oti said the National Peace Council could have done more to assist in weapons collection in a remote and fragmented province like Temotu. Mr Oti says it is likely that for Temotu province many weapons may not be collected by the end of the guns amnesty period on twenty first of August."
