Fiji's NFP calls for more progress in multi-party talks

4:32 pm on 19 August 2003

The leader of Fiji's National Federation party, Prem Singh, says after two years of talanoa talks, there should have been more progress on the multi-party cabinet discussions.

Talks between the government and the Labour party have stalled and the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has told the Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry to come up with a list of names to be included in the cabinet.

But, Mr Chaudhry has expressed concerns that the number of posts offered are too few and the ministries too minor.

Mr Singh says the two leaders don't seem to want to work with each other.

"As time passes there is a lot of anxiety with the people, who would like to see an amicable resolution to the present problem. I believe that it needs genuine dialogue, very honest discussions, and the two leaders must display some leadership qualities at this point in time because we're going through a very crucial time in Fiji."
