The Fiji Labour Party has welcomed the adoption of a Regional Leadership Code at the recent Pacific Forum summit.

Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, says he hopes regional leaders will diligently uphold the code in the promotion of good governance and respect for the rule of law.

The Fiji Times quotes Mr Chaudhry as saying the prime minister, Laisnia Qarase, would do well to take note of Principle One of the code which, among other things, calls for compliance with the letter and spirit of lawfully created policies.

Mr Chaudhry says Principle One calls for respect for democratic processes and institutions, a fair and honest government, and respect for and enforcement of the decisions of the courts and independent tribunals.

He says the Regional Leadership Code addresses all the concerns raised in the Fiji Labour Party's briefing paper to the Forum which highlighted the constitutional crisis in Fiji.
