An American Samoa senator has called for primary elections to be introduced in the territory to choose the top candidates for key post, such as governor and delegate to the US Congress.

Faiivae Galea'i is co-sponsoring a bill with two other senators on the issue, saying the time for such a change is right.

"It is a good time to have our own primary election law...that's why we introduced this bill....the primary will take the top two and if there is a draw in the second spot then three will run for the final election"
