A sea rescue is underway in the south of French Polynesia after a distress call was received in Papeete from the Tahiti Nui IV.

The authorities says another vessel is in the area.

A safety raft has been spotted with an unspecified number of people in it.

The rescue was launched after the ship with 22 people on board raised the alarm near the island of Rimatara.

Official say the 10 passengers are mainly workmen and technicians employed in building an airstrip on Rimatara.
