Vanuatu's Barak Sope is confident of winning by-election

Vanuatu's deposed parliamentarian, Barak Sope, predicts he can secure fourteen hundred votes in the up coming by-election ...a figure that would squeeze out most of his opponents.

Mr Sope secured just over 700 votes in the elections in May 2002.

However with the Union of Moderate Parties, he could better his last performance.

Based on previous experiences, the Vanuatu Daily Post says any planned by-election will also see a number of independent candidates ..many of whom will contest on their own initiative. Others might be funded by larger parties to offset the chance of their opponents.
