4:37 am on 11 September 2003

Fiji's Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, says he has completed his consultations with the Labour Party leader on its participation in a multi-party cabinet.

In a statement , Mr Qarase says he is now in a position to make a decision on the issue.

But Radio Fiji reports that Mr Qarase will first brief President Iloilo before making a public announcement next Wednesday.

The president is on a state visit to China and is scheduled to return this weekend.

Mr Qarase says his meetings with Mahendra Chaudhry and his exchange of letters with the Labour leader puts him in a position to make a decision on Labour's participation in a multi-party cabinet.

14 Labour MPs invited by Mr Qarase to join his cabinet have declined to do so, saying Mr Chaudhry will decide who joins the cabinet.
